Myth of sky rocketing textbook costs

State and federal legislatures are on the move attempting to lower the cost of college by attacking the price of textbooks. Jim Minatel has a different take on how to help students save on the total cost of college. He has a nice breakdown comparing the effects of inflation on college tuition compared to the effect of inflation on textbooks. He comes to this conclusion...

So yes, while both college and textbook costs are rising faster than inflation, and certainly faster than my wages or those of anyone I know, if you want to do something real about the money being stolen from you to pay for the cost of entry for your kids into the "real world," attack the elephant in the room that costing you $4000-$15,000 a year over what "the real world" says it should. The few hundred a year you might save if textbook costs were held down to inflation rates are chump change in this equation, or beer money for our beloved, departed Tommy's Silver Dollar Saloon.

Site Update: Price Comparison XML API Available!

We've worked hard to find a way to make our results available to extend our service in ways we never thought of. So we are happy to announce the immediate availability of our Price Comparison XML API.

The results are the same results from our own site, in a very simple XML format. The REST interface accepts a developer key, and either a book's ISBN or EAN, and that's it! The output is easy as well, with both book information and price inofrmation returned.

We hope to see some innovative and inventive uses of our API in the coming weeks, we'll see how it goes.

To receive a developer key, simply contact us and describe your idea briefly to us.

To see more information and an example of the output, see here.

Publication cost comparison: Chemistry Textbook vs Thoreau's Walden

Doug Tygar is a professor of Computer Science and Information Management at AC Berkeley, posts this Publication cost comparison sheet being distributed by Prentice-Hall.

The sheet compares the publication cost of two books, an unidentified Chemistry book and Thoreau's: Walden.

The number of free samples produced was impressive. In this example Prentice-Hall.
provides the production costs for a 30,000 copy run. For each 30,000 books produced they have an estimated 6500 free samples. That is a healthy chunk of change going to providing something to professors for free. Of course these costs are inevitably passed on to the student while often the professor sells the desk copy back and makes money.

An Inside Higher Ed article on the New Federal report that covers the "rising cost of textbooks"

People have provided many good comments on this post with different insights on why textbooks cost what they cost.

A sample from screename UCprof

It’s interesting that the GAO report showed a 6% yearly rise in the cost of textbooks between 1986 and 2004, compared to a 7% rise in tuition and fees. One wonders why congress isn’t investigating those much larger and more significant increases.

The minimum bid is $100.00. The list has been very valuable to us. We use it for research, PPC marketing and much more. We are testing how much demand (if any) there is for a list of popular ISBNs that are primarily textbooks and in demand NOW.

We think the list would be great for...

Case study: Effect of offering free book downloads on sales

Tim O'Reily provides statistics on downloads versus sales of the book Asterisk: The Future of Telephony, by Leif Madsen, Jared Smith, and Jim Van Meggelen,

The whole post is worth the read. This snippet provides a summary of the results.

The quick answer from this experiment is that we saw no definitive correlation, but there is little sign that the free downloads hurt sales. More than 180,000 copies were downloaded from Jeremy's mirror (which is one of five!), yet the book has still been quite successful, selling almost 19,000 copies in a year and a half. This is quite good for a technical book these days -- the book comes in at #23 on our lifetime-to-date sales list for the "class of 2005" (books published in 2005) despite being released at the end of September.

The bill's recommendations mirror suggestions made by the Board of Regents after its textbook price study.

The project is called Books for Baghdad. Last year they collected and donated 20,000 textbooks to Baghdad and Babylon University in Iraq.
College Textbook Affordability Act of 2007

Congress is considering "The College Textbook Affordability Act of 2007" which would attempt to lower the cost of textbooks for college students.

Summary of the bill...

Requires publishers informing teachers at institutions of higher education about textbooks or supplements in their subject areas to include written information concerning: (1) the price the publisher would charge the bookstore associated with such institution for such items; (2) any history of revisions for such items; and (3) whether such items are available in other formats, including paperback and unbound, and the price the publisher would charge the bookstore for items in those formats.

Requires a publisher that sells a textbook and any accompanying supplement as a single bundled item also to sell them separately and unbundled.

Directs federally-assisted institutions of higher education to include on printed or internet course schedules the International Standard Book Number (ISBN) and retail price for each required or recommended textbook or supplement for listed courses.

Requires such institutions to provide sellers of textbooks (other than publishers) that meet their requirements with: (1) their course schedules for the subsequent academic period; (2) the ISBN for each textbook or supplement required or recommended for each course; and (3) the number of students enrolled, and the maximum enrollment, in each course.

Cranky Librarian #1

This one speaks for itself...

Or the little slackers who opt not to buy the textbook at the beginning of the semester without checking to see if the library even has one copy of that textbook and then come up to me asking for it. I love telling them that we don't buy the textbook for core classes and seeing the look of sheer panic on their faces the day before finals. Ah, but these little happy moments are not enough to sustain me through one more summer of this place

Cranky Librarian #2

This librarian is upset that textbook companies are providing free access to information that could previously only be obtained through the library.

I do think is that academic librarians will want to be alert to where Pearson heads with this purchase of eCollege. If your institution takes a closer look at whatever CMS product this publisher brings to the marketplace, it would be advisable to get a librarian on the committee that evaluates the CMS to determine in what ways, if any, Pearson is bundling add-ons like Research Navigator into the product. These databases simply duplicate what the academic library offers, and often just add unnecessarily to the product’s price.

From Livescience

A recent study at the University of Minnesota suggests that ceiling height affects problem-solving skills and behavior by priming concepts that encourage certain kinds of brain processing.

"Priming means a concept gets activated in a person's head," researcher Joan Meyers-Levy told LiveScience. "When people are in a room with a high ceiling, they activate the idea of freedom. In a low-ceilinged room, they activate more constrained, confined concepts.

Uship.com alleviates the pain of packing and moving

Uship.com can help if you plan on moving in the not to distant future. The primary service of Uship is an auction style listing service. You list the items you need shipped and the price you are willing to pay to have them shipped. Shippers then bid on the job. If there is a match, you accept and proceed with the transaction. Like other auction services (ie ebay) the shippers are rated on performance by past customers.

Uship.com also offers lots of moving and packing tips including these:

The Lightwedge uses LED and a page size acrylic lens to direct the light right onto the page.

The Lightwedge site recommends the Original for hardcover books and large paperbacks.

Can anybody really ace finals without cramming?

Scott Young gives an in depth overview of how Holistic learning helped him avoid cramming for finals. Here is just one gem from his post.

Holistic learning takes an opposite approach. Learning holistically is not done by trying to remember information by using repetition and force. Holistic learners instead organize their minds like spider webs. Every piece of information is a single point. That point is then consciously related to tons of other points on the web.

Having the interconnected web of information allows you to make connections between subjects and better fill in missing information with an educated guess.
You can integrate new information into your existing web with questions, visualizations, and metaphors. Using these tools ensures you fully understand the new topic so that you know which points within the web to connect it to.

How far away is it? Cool tool helps you calculate walking distance

Need to find out how many miles you have to walk to class? What about how many miles you have to walk to get the grocery store?

Lots of options existed for finding out driving distances, but Matt Cutts from Google brought this handy tool to our attention for measuring walking distance. You just set the start and end points of your walk on Google Maps. It calculates miles covered and calories burned!

Food for thought: 5 brain boosters for the grocery list

Feeling a little out of focus last week I decided to look up the latest findings on brain foods. Here is what stuck out in my search.

Chocolate

Flavanols are a naturally occurring nutrient in cocoa, and they benefit the brain by increasing circulation and improving blood vessel function. Remember to keep it small, too much sugar can leave you feeling sedated.

Blueberries

Blueberries contain a high level of antioxidants, more than spinach, beets, and blackberries. Antioxidants protect the body against damage from oxidative stress which inhibits cognitive function. You can buy them frozen and they make great snack. Find them in your local grocery store for under $00.30 an ounce.

Fish

Some love it, I don't, but if you are looking for brain food you can't ignore fish. The fatty acids found in fish oil keep proving in study after study to have positive effects on brain power. You don't have to fillet a trout or hook a mackerel to get the benefits of these brain boosting fatty acids, 3-4 capsules of fish oil should work. You can find the capsules at all major pharmacies and grocery outlets.

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is a must-have on the list. One study showed 2 out of 5 people have below normal levels of B12. Skip this vitamin and expect memory loss, balance disturbances and reduced sensation in the limbs, none of which are good for learning. This vitamin is found primarily in meat but is hard to digest so consider using a supplement.

Water

You don't have to drown yourself but do have a glass a couple times a day. About 80% of the brain is made of water (not soda) so keeping it well hydrated is important. Dehydration can lead to headaches and fatigue, which can further inhibit brain function.

For more information:

We are back! It has been awhile since we posted only because we have been really trying hard to improve the site. We have focused our efforts around

1. page load time
2. price accuracy

If the page loads slow or the prices are not accurate then we have wasted your time and we don't want to waste your time.

We have made significant improvements in both areas. We have also added measurements to the system to ensure that things stay this way. We complete the following steps to check the accuracy of our prices:

1. Compare prices on the 5 most popular isbns at Directtextbook.com

2. Click on each buy link and record if the price shown matches the current price listed on the store's site

Using O'Reilly's Safari to Save on Books in Computer Science

It won't have everything, but even if it has only a few of the books you need, O'Reilly's Safari service can save you a nice chunk of change over time.

You maintain a 'bookshelf', a set of books you can access online, that can be exchanged after being on the shelf for a month. For a 5-slot bookshelf, you pay only $10 a month.

At the very least, having the bookshelf can get you out of a bind for information, even if it's not a required textbook.

O'Reilly's Safari should not be confused with SafariX which deals with more mainstream textbook ebook titles.

Openoffice calc word count formula

I found a formula for doing word counts through excel <a href LookSmarts Findwhat.com

A recent tip ("Counting Words in Excel") presented an Excel macro to count the number of words in a cell. But I found a much easier way to do this using a formula instead of a macro:

=IF(ISBLANK(A1),0,LEN(TRIM(SUBSTITUTE (A1,CHAR(10)," ")))-LEN(SUBSTITUTE (SUBSTITUTE(TRIM(A1),CHAR(10),"")," ",""))+1)

But the formula did not work in openoffice calc. Here is what I came up with...

=IF(ISBLANK(b1);0;LEN(TRIM(SUBSTITUTE (b1;CHAR(32);" ")))-LEN(SUBSTITUTE (SUBSTITUTE(TRIM(b1);CHAR(32);"");" ";""))+1)

Ahh it feels good to know how many words are in each of those cells.

Buying textbooks online? 4 steps for getting the right textbook on time

Below is the Direct Textbook back to school August 2006 press release. We think you may find the online order tips helpful. Enjoy!

(PRNewswire) – Salem, OR – August 2006 - The average American college student spends about $900 per year for textbooks. This makes it no surprise that students and parents are seeking refuge with online booksellers that offer prices 20%-80% cheaper than the college bookstore. However, making a few common mistakes can easily eat up that entire savings.1

Direct Textbook www.directtextbook.com, a textbook price comparison engine for students and parents, offers this checklist to use before pressing that buy button.

1. Make sure you are ordering the correct book

Matching the isbn number from the class syllabus to the book being ordered is the easiest way to ensure you are buying the correct edition. If ordering from a marketplace and the isbn is not visible in the listing, ask the seller. Do not purchase a book until the number matches.

2. Know how long it takes for the order to leave the seller's location

Factor the order turnaround time into your overall shipping time to get the most accurate idea of when your item will be delivered. For example, one bookseller states that ”order-processing time is approximately 1-3 days.” However, it adds that “a small number of items demand 6 days to leave the warehouse.” Keep in mind, if one book is delayed, the entire order will be held up.

3. Know the location of the seller and the approximate delivery time of the shipping carrier

Knowing where your item will be shipped from is the only way to calculate an estimated arrival date. If buying from a marketplace, each book should have a location listed. If buying from a retailer such as Wal-Mart, know the location of the warehouse. Estimated USPS shipping times for media and priority mail can be calculated on the usps.com website.

4. Check the return policy

Maybe the most important thing to remember is to know the return policy of the seller. Return policies among online booksellers vary greatly, so read carefully and take notes before purchasing. Don't expect to make a return that does not match a seller's policy.

“By following these steps and being knowledgeable about who you are purchasing from, you are sure to have a more positive buying experience,” said Chris Lindgren, www.Directtextbook.com

Direct Textbook Inc. is celebrating its 5th year providing students the ability to find the very lowest price on textbooks with their textbook price comparison search at www.directtextbook.com.

Reading is a favorite summertime activity, and for a great reason. You can enjoy a good book pretty much anywhere. Take one camping, rafting, sailing, to the park, or just out in the backyard. Most students tend to forget about the fun side of reading by the time the term ends, and they miss out on great stories and life lessons that compliment a sunny day.

Why are used books so hard to find?

You enter the bookstore on the third day of classes, only to find they are completely sold out of everything but new textbooks for your class. You know they had some used books at one point, your friend sold the very same book back to the bookstore at the end of last semester for $10. You ask the lady behind the counter and she tells you they are all sold out, and you have to buy new, despite the fact that it is $30 more expensive.

Used books are more valuable and less available for a number of reasons. The average gross margin on a used book is 12% more than on a new book, despite the fact it costs less. This means campus bookstores can buy used books from students at such a low price they make more profit on used inventory than the new books they purchased at wholesale. Naturally the bookstores promote and sell those higher profit books first. And while new books can be produced at the same rate as students demand them, used books are always a limited resource, eventually selling out and creating a rush at the beginning of the buying season. Finally, used books just have a higher demand. The lower cost means most students will choose a used book every time they get the chance.

So how can you find your book used AND the lowest price possible?

Shop early. As the overall inventory of used books shrinks throughout the term you have a less and less chance of finding what you are looking for.

Verify the isbn with your class list. This way you can ensure you are buying the right book and can avoid return costs.

Compare prices. Use directtextbook.com to compare prices from multiple stores. You may be able to buy a used copy from another student on ebay or amazon long after the bookstore has run out.

Where have all the isbns gone?

It used to be finding a textbook isbn was simple. It was always listed in black and white directly above the upc code on the cover of a book for all the world to find. You could simply write the isbn down and price shop online with confidence, knowing that an isbn match means you were buying the exact right book for your class. Well folks, things have changed. Due to increased competition for the school store generated from the larger used inventory and lower prices of online vendors, textbook publishers and campus bookstores are making it harder and harder for students to get that magic little number.

On a recent visitation to over 100 colleges and universities, we found a intense effort to hide the almighty isbn. Some schools are having special editions of textbooks published just for them. These new editions do not have any additional information in the text of the book, it simply allows the school to require the students to buy an isbn that is not available anywhere else besides the campus bookstore. So if you want a used book and the bookstore is out, tough luck. With their special isbn is impossible to make an exact match to another book for sale online.

Another tactic is hide the isbn inside the book instead of on the outside cover, and then shrink-wrap the book before placing it on the shelf. This way, in order to access the isbn and accurately compare prices online, the student must first purchase the book and unwrap it, also making it so you cant return the book for the full price. This is fine for students who have parents that write them a check for books each semester, but what about those who spend 70% of community college costs on books alone? Ask your bookstore for the isbn if you cant find it. They have this information readily available and can easily access it for you.

Buying and selling textbooks for the best price possible

Buying and selling textbooks during the course of your college years can be many things, few of which are pleasant. It is expensive, frustrating, time consuming, and just plain annoying. Time in the campus bookstore is punctuated with long lines and less than civil service, all to wind up buying the new book for $40 more when you actually wanted the used, and receiving a measly $5 when it is time to sell the book back.

Now you can take advantage of the same price comparison technology directtextbook.com offers for buying your textbooks online when you are selling them back as well. By clicking on the sell textbooks link on the directtextbook.com homepage or going to http://sell.directtextbook.com , you can easily access all the online vendors that are currently purchasing your used textbook. It even shows the price they are willing to pay and it shipping is included, all you have to do is enter the isbn. By checking these results first, you can find out if the campus bookstore is offering a fair price for your used book. If not, you can simply sell it to another company that is offering more. And we all know how far an little extra money goes in the college days! Check out our press release for more information.

Fund your club

Directtextbook.com now has a campus partner program that clubs and individuals can use to raise money for their cause (or themselves!). With the campus partner program , the club or individual does the marketing on their campus, and in turn receives a percentage of every sale that is generated from that campus. Marketing is whatever fits within your school's guidelines. Common forms of promotion being used are fliers, word of mouth, club newsletters, online links, and event booths. The more buyers from your school, the more money you make, usually between $200 and $2000 per term. If you are interested in being the representative on your campus, please let us know. We extend this offer to only one club or individual per school. You can request a sign up form at http://www.directtextbook.com/partners-contact.php or email us.

Marketplace Madness

If you're trying to save money on textbooks right now, you have my pity. Marketplaces like Half and Amazon, and most others, are a complete mess lately.

What's the problem? The listings are absolutely clogged with listings starting with "Please Read!..." You have to click to the details page to get the full story, and if you're lucky, they'll tell you it's a paperback before you order.

Now we have nothing against international editions. But in this kind of situation, you have no way of knowing if you're getting a good deal on the book or not. It's cheaper, yes, but it could be marked up triple, and have no resale value.

So in the end, you may end up paying more, because the difference between the price you pay and the price you can sell for is more.

Special Tip
For the brave among you, try this-- it worked both times I did it. Buy a book on Half that you suspect is a softcover international edition, but that isn't clear in the details. Take a minute, you'll see them.

When you get it, send a message to the seller saying, "This is not the ISBN listed on the Half page. How can I return it?"

Both times, I received an offer for a $15 credit to keep the book. I sent them back anyway, but if you don't care if you have a softcover anyway, it's worth trying.

It also points out how much of a ripoff some of the paperback textbooks are, that there is $15 of profit they'd sacrifice on a $40 book.

21st Century Textbook Industry Innovations

It's pretty sad when, in 2005, this kind of innovation is cause for an award.

"Now, students register for courses online and are given the option to buy the textbooks listed for those courses, new or used, at the same time."

Wow. I'm stunned. It's unbelievable that this is news at all. if universities can't effectively lower prices, I don't know how it's taken them so long to at least improve service or provide some kind of incentive to buy besides location.

I suppose it's good news in a way, that even the most slow-changing of all bookstores are finally seeing the writing on the wall and changing, but getting an award for it is a bit much.

Kentucky Wants to Look Into Textbook Prices

As if saving money wasn't enough of a reason to buy intelligently, here's another-- State Representative Rick Nelson wants Kentucky to formally look into why textbook prices are so high.

As with most situations, the government solution is likely to be no better or slightly worse than the problem itself. Whether they limit professor choice on books, or limit profitability of publishers, the quality of education would likely suffer.

Now is a great time to tell a friend about Direct Textbook, about other ways of saving on books, and to take responsibility for the cost of textbooks before the choice leaves the school and the student altogether.

Buy your textbook by the page?

This site for Rural Physicians in Canada offers some textbook buying advice for the Medical profession.

The site discusses measuring the cost per page of a book. They even provide the average cost per page for a medical book in Canada (00.10 per page) I had not thought about the cost of a book related to the number of pages. Of course cost/page needs to be viewed in the context of the books primary value which is the organized and logical dissemination of knowledge on the subject.

The cost per page would seem to be a great baseline in evaluating textbooks. One step further would be to look at the cost per usable page, with a usable page being something that will be covered as part of the course curriculum.

The cost per page for three of Direct Textbooks top sellers...

Biology 6th Edition Cost per page $00.11

Individual and the Universe: An Introduction to Philosophy Cost per page $00.19

Chemistry: The Central Science, Ninth Edition Cost per page $00.13

Artificial Intelligence(AI) textbook comparison

What criteria are professors, academic institutions currently using to decide which textbook is most suitable? I am assuming the criteria centers around subjective decision making on the part of the professor. Or I imagine a committee is formed and a vote taken so the average of everyone's subjective evaluation is the verdict.

Why do I doubt most professors are performing work similar to Stuart Russell who offers his textbook comparison for the subject of artifical intelligence

From the creators "OAIster is a project of the University of Michigan Digital Library Production Service.
Medical Textbooks: To Print or Not to print?

Barbara Amelia Nace from Merk Manuals covers her view of the medical textbook industry. "To Print or Not to Print Medical Textbooks: Is That the Question?" on Issues in Science and Technology Librarianship

Th article includes a nice overview of key difference between journals and textbooks. Along with some predictions on the direction medical textbooks are headed.

What would a new model for publishing medical textbooks look like? Consider the concept of a "bound" and an "unbound" book. Consider a print version (the "bound" book) with the traditional hierarchical organization (sections and chapters) and an electronic version (the "unbound" book) of the same book that is not simply a reproduction of its print form, but rather is organized for easy access to information, unbound from a section/chapter structure.

Her comments seem insightful but only reality will tell. Like all changes caused by the internet the answer will result from competition within the publishing industry and dicatated by consumer needs not the "publishing industries" vision.

Frink solves the question how many cases in a keg?

Not only can Frink tell you how many cases are in a keg it can do lots lots more.

Best explained by its creator Alan Eliasen "Frink is a practical calculating tool and programming language designed to help us all to better understand the world around us, to help us get calculations right without getting bogged down in the mechanics, and to make a tool that's really useful in the real world."

So how can you use Frink? Some great examples are provided. For instance...

1. How much alcohol is in a can of beer that is 3.2% alcohol volume?
2. How many cases in keg?

So what can you do that is little more constructive? Here is a sampling

Calculate exchange rates

Subtract/Add/Divide/Multiply different units of measure ie gallons and liters

Unit conversion

Advanced mathematical functions

Tons more

You can also download the entire program and run it on your own site(you need to be able to run Java Servlets)

Best of all Frink is free and being updated continually.

Excellent Source of Free References for Medical Students

FSU Medical School has created a great starting point for locating free medical reference materials online with their "Find Medical Information" page. Clever title, I know, but don't let that throw you off.

It's a nicely presented flowchart, and it points out a lot of great free resources across the web, not just at FSU. We are going to add some of the more helpful links into our Medical Textbooks area, if you have any suggestions feel free to contact us.

MBS eTextbook 10 University Trial

Articles from two of the schools participating in MBS Textbook Exchange 10 university trial of electronic textbook alternatives.

The articles imply MBS authorized students to purchase electronic textbooks. The reality of electronic textbooks is that they are available through publishers, electronic publishing consortiums or free on the internet. The college book stores do not grant rights, yet, on where students can purchase required books.

The student comments from the articles are negative. It will be interesting to see comments from students who use the electronic books not just the ones daydreaming about using them.

"I wouldn't feel like I was getting anything for my money," said Mari Hickman, a senior economics major who also passed on an e-text. "I would rather have the book in front of me than at my house hoping my computer doesn't break down."
The Register-Guard, Eugene, Oregon

Davila herself has not bought any electronic textbooks, nor does she know anybody else who has. "I'm a little old-fashioned," she said, referring to her enjoyment of the feel of a book in her hands. She said she imagines it would be annoying to have to scroll up and down pages on a computer rather than being able to immediately turn to a section in a book."

Audio Book Options

While exercising, eating, laying down, or just walking between classes, listening to audiobooks instead of reading can be a great timesaver at school.

Audible.com
The best of the pay audiobooks sites. Digital downloads and wide device support mean immediate access to what you need.

Audio Books For Free
Less of a selection, but free is a great price. From what I can see, mainly out-of-copyright titles and obscure titles.

Audio Books.com
They claim to have the largest selection, but not all of them are downloadable.

Audio Books Online
Decent selection, but again, most need shipping.

Audio Book Club
Similar to a Columbia House club style, for those that like those sorts of things. Many titles downloadable though.

I've been an Audible subscriber for more than a year and I think it's great, but in school I would have probably just bought what I needed one at a time.

For just about any literature class, it's worth a shot.

Multiple Formats to Save Money

In order to save real money on books, as in 90% or more, the best way is to use an earlier edition. If you check with your professor first(and your professor gives a rat), often you will be allowed to use the last edition of a book.

As an example, take Principles of Microeconomics. Can these principles honestly have changed much between 2000 and 2003? I doubt it, but the year 2000's 2nd edition is under $10 with shipping.

If you look in the right-hand column of the comparison page, in the box title "This Book in Other Formats", you will see the list of other available formats of the book.

Again, be sure to check with your professor, and we hope this new feature will help save you all more money.

Provides textbook specific study guides, sample/practice questions and answers. It does cost $4.99 per mont
